The Power of “Being Together” Transforms Vulnerability into Resilience

The journey of a parent accompanying a young person with Special Educational Needs (SEN) is, most often, one of extremes. It is a path marked by small victories that are huge in meaning, but also by moments of exhaustion, isolation, or uncertainty. In this context, the concept of “being together” is not just a social ideal, but a vital therapeutic resource that brings validation to the shared experience.

Many times, parents of young people with SEN feel like they live in a parallel world to others. The feeling that “no one truly understands” can lead to defensive self-isolation.

The power of “togetherness” begins when a parent meets another who mirrors their feelings. When you hear someone say, “I’ve been through this too,” the weight of stigma and guilt diminishes. This social validation lowers cortisol levels (the stress hormone) and gives the mind the space it needs to seek solutions, not just to survive.

Parents Need a Support Network as an “External Lung”

No system can function indefinitely without external supply. For parents, “being together” translates into support groups, a multidisciplinary team, and an extended community. Friends and family who learn to be present without judgment, offering that much-needed “breath.”

The Power of Being Together Is a Space for Learning Through Mirroring and Sharing Best Practices

Young people with SEN have unique developmental rhythms. When parents are together, they become a living library of resources. A strategy that worked for a young person with autism in managing anxiety can become an anchor for another family. This transfer of experience reduces the search time and increases the sense of parental competence.

The Power of Being Together Involves Presence,

the deep connection between parent and young person. Beyond therapies, exercises, and educational goals, there is the need to simply be. Acceptance of the young person as they are today, not as they “should” be, the joy of quiet moments that have no immediate therapeutic purpose, and building a family identity defined not just by diagnosis, but by human connection.

So I invite you to the workshop “The Power of Being Together,” created with the intention of rediscovering inner resources through small but safe steps.
